Yes it sounds less like Styx than any other album. Neither is it an outstanding album. But many bands fall to pieces after loss of key members , musically on this album at least they didn't. Credit to Burtnik he just didn't join to be a bit player. Songs are consistently strong although there is a big variation in style and yes the album at times does lurch between an 80's vibe and the ballads which could have , at least in structure, have come from the 1950's.
