Detroit-born blues-rock guitarist and later Rolling Stones member Harvey Mandel had an innovative approach to the electric guitar and was one of the first to employ an intricate two-handed fretboard tapping technique. Raised in suburban Morton Grove, outside Chicago, Mandel joined Charley Musselwhite's band in 1965 at the age of 20, which brought him to the San Francisco Bay Area, where local disc jockey and up-and-coming record producer Abe Kesh landed him a solo contract with Philips. He played simultaneously with Graham Bond, joined Canned Heat to play at Woodstock, and then joined John Mayall's band
