Stretch Of The Imagination (CD)
When it comes to crazy and non-repetitive arrangements, these guys were without parallel for their time and genre, period. Choruses are generally brief except for the songs that lack them completely, and the idea of returning to melodies at all clearly made them uneasy. If that was indeed their aim, the decision to put Lord of the Blackfields as opener was a good one, which goes through so many different sections, from syncopated stop-start intensity, to seemingly-dissonant wave-like chords over contrasting drive, to classic power metal melody, to intense shred-filled aggression, the only reuse at all being that they return to the last mini-verse at the very end. And that all happens in about three and a half minutes. In their weird ways, Doesn't Seem sort of "cheats" in the sense that they start with a lead guitar melody and then modify it a half-dozen ways including by having the vocalist (very awkwardly) sing it for the first half of the song, which actually can get repetitive, but in the second half they have a number of breaks so incredible they more than make up for it.
