Young Blues = LP = (LP)
The success of this album is the culmination of chemistry built in three previous collaborations by Larry Young, Jimmie Smith, and Thornel Schwartz: Jimmy Forrests' Forrest Fire, and Larry Young's Testifying and Groove Street.
The opening energetic drum line signals that the album will be more fun. The energy and slight quirkiness continues from there. And you wouldn't necessarily think so but adding a bassist to the mix made a big difference. It's groovier. "African Blues" is fantastic. It sounds like something that Chico Hamilton would come up with if he had worked with an organist. Even the drumming during "Minor Dream" is Chico-esque.
