According to the title on the label, Full Moon Fever is Tom Petty's first album without the Heartbreakers although, as the majority of the band act as backing, this is a debatable point. Equally, given that Petty finds guest spots for Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and George Harrison, members of his successful side project the Travelling Wilburys, and Heartbreaker Mike Campbell, it could be claimed that Petty is hardly taking any risks at all. But such specious comments would be petty (ha! ha!) and unfairly levelled at an album that mixes folk, pop, country and rock in equal measures and rarely misses its mark.
