Sun Moon & Herbs (CD)
The Sun, Moon & Herbs pretty clearly shows the direction Dr. John was going to head in. This lacks the strange swampy atmosphere of Gris-Gris and Remedies, and instead, is far more like Babylon in terms of being more jazzy sounding and focusing more on Dr. John's (excellent) piano playing, which would be the selling point of every one of Dr. John's subsequent albums (par Locked Down) starting with Gumbo. Dr. John uses less exotic instruments and unorthodox arrangements here, so the sound is far more traditional New Orleans than he had previously explored. His voice is also less tripped out, but make no mistake, the man was pretty clearly out there. Lyrically, the songs are more New Orleans focused than his last two albums, which were somewhat abstract protest albums. Starting off with a boisterous celebration of John the Conqueror was a good sign to me, as the only protest song by Dr. John I was particularly fond of was Angola Anthem.
