Larry Coryell With The Widehive Players = Papersleeve = (CD)
Guitar legend Larry Coryell joins forces with a group of impressive session musicians in this new funk jam, Larry Coryell With the Wide Hive Players, due to be released next week on April 12th. Dubbed "the Godfather of Fusion" by Downbeat Magazine, Larry Coryell has earned a permanent place in music history. He brought what amounted to a near alien sensibility to jazz-electric guitar playing in the 1960's, a hard-edged, cutting tone that owed as much to blues, rock and even country as it did to earlier, smoother bop influences. The Players consist of bassist Matt Montgomery (Calvin Keys and Variable Unit) and Thomas McCree (Lyrics Born's drummer), horn players Mike Rinta (Sly Stone, Santana), Doug Rowan (Jazz Mafia) and pianist Adam Shulman, all contribute to create a cohesive alive sound, reminiscent of Coryell's popular Offerings or Eleventh House era (1972-74). Primarily Jazz-Funk, the album also glows with overtones of soul, blues, has a definitive rock undercurrent.
