Berlin = Papersleeve = (CD)
Now two years removed from their Nuclear Blast debut Abra Kadavar, German power-trio Kadavar have continued to prove that they are a massive force to be reckoned with. As far as their style goes, it isn't always easy to push forward and break new ground in the whole psych rock genre, but Kadavar really does it as good as anybody, especially on Berlin, their second for Nuclear Blast and third in 5 years of existence. On Berlin, one of the things about Kadavar's sound that really seems to pop out is just how obsessively catchy their hooks are. Around every corner lurks a really infectious riff it seems. One of my favorite riffs on the album is the incredibly simple-yet-catchy riff in the chorus of "Spanish Wild Rose". Another of the great riffs on the album is the intro riff, and really all of the riffs in "The Old Man". I also really enjoyed the almost Uli Jon Roth-esque intro on "Thousand Miles Away From Home" which give way to a banging, throbbing rhythm that continues to beat its way until an even more incensed chorus that is a gut-puncher and a half. Honestly, this entire album is really chock full of incredible moments. Whether it be with the heavy riffs, the incredibly perfect, pounding drum-work accompanying those riffs, or vocalist Christoph Lindemann's fantastic singing, if you enjoy old school, psychedelic rock n' roll that has as much in common with The Scorpions and Deep Purple as it does Hawkwind and Rush, this album is certainly a must-hear!
