Malice In Wonderland (CD)
A career high point and many a fan's favourite Naz album, Malice In Wonderland (1980) balanced the group's hard rock energy with a polished, radio-friendly approach that reaped dividends on both rockers and ballads alike and successfully introduced a number of new instruments - like vibraphone - into the Nazareth sound palette. It was produced by Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter of Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan fame and the sound remains a marvel of clarity and texture to this day. Singer Dan McCafferty particularly likes the album because it was such a departure from the band's trademark approach. "The thing is," he says, "that No Mean City was one of the heaviest LPs we ever did, and Malice In Wonderland was one of the softest ones we ever did. Because they were released back to back, I think it was a bit of a shock for some people when they bought the record - but it was nice to do something different. That's what we liked about it... And a lot of our fans like this one best. I think it must be the quality of the material." Bassist Pete Agnew agrees. "Malice... has a different sound to the one that Nazareth was used to. It's funny, people say 'Oh, it doesn't sound like Nazareth' but we did a poll on our website recently to find out which one of our albums people like best - and the album which got the most votes was Malice In Wonderland, even more than Razamanaz or Hair Of The Dog. We sign copies of that album a lot, and there are numbers on the LP that we still play a lot. We still do 'Holiday' as the second-last song in the set and we do 'Big Boy' now and again." Carefully remastered from the original tapes and bolstered by the addition of seven excellent live tracks from the BBC archives, this is the definitive version of an album that represented the beginning of a new era for Nazareth.
