Even if it is widely agreed to define Judas Priest - along with Iron Maiden and Motörhead - as the main representatives of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) that started in the late 70s and reached its peak in the early 80s, "The Priest" actually created the link between the golden age of British Hard Rock (led by Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin) of the early 70s and the aforementioned NWOBHM Judas Priest released their first album in 1974, in the midst of the hard rock era, but it wasn't until 1980 with the release of their 6th album British Steel that they gained mainstream attention, and since then their sound changed dramatically from that of their early albums. Since then Judas Priest became key figures of the genre, both musically (many of their songs are essential classics of heavy metal) and with their image of leather and studs, which was taken up by thousands of bands after them
