A Real Elegant Gypsy (CD)
Well, what we seem to have here is another release for The Complete Guitarist cd, whose dull if accurate title itself actually concealed the It Could Happen To You album, with two extra tracks levered in at the end from Can't Stand Noise (and now here used instead as bookends)! Away from that disc, the songs Pietons and Journey sound fussy and clunky, the guitar less up front than in the other tracks - pleasant enough, but best heard in their original context. The four other songs however are excellent examples of Akkerman's style, with a dark, organic sound that has the guitar flickering out of the speakers with the clipped clarity it deserves. Opener Old Tennis Shoes is a shuffling bluesy boogie sort of thing with a muscular, drawling guitar sound that snaps and crackles and then slides as if by accident in and out of a lyrical, suitably nostalgic chorus. Come Closer is gentle, relaxed, melodic, nice but no classic. Funkology is excellent - shouldering in with a nippy wee guitar figure that gradually loosens up into a slithery vaguely menacing groove that suddenly in an idyllic flurry of strings turns acoustic and diverts into a cascade of shimmery picking. It Could Happen To You is a sweet, delicious tune reminiscent of the romantic ballads like Love Remembered and Le Clochard that he came up with for Focus.
