Fillmore East: June 1971 (CD)
The Mothers' Fillmore East, June 1971 concert does not get the credit that it deserves. But then again, most of Zappa's live material is sorely underrated. The Fillmore East concert may not be the Mothers' best live album but it does adhere to the same script as their other live material. One part musical concert, one part standup comedy, and one part theatrical performance, this album is wildly different than other groups' concerts from that time period and it is for this reason that The Mothers are so great. Admittedly, this will not be an easy introduction to those unfamiliar with their work. Those expecting verse, chorus, verse song structure with conservative, short guitar solos will largely be disappointed. Listening to the album, you would not guess that there are twelve tracks given that most of them flow between each other without pause and often without any major change to style. Zappa switches tempo and themes so often anyway, having track titles here is largely pointless. Instead, focus on the album as a singular unit - one live concert to be heard front to back, without interruption (with the exception of the final three tracks which a detached form the prior tracks). The Mothers are big on themes and this is the only way to pick them up and enjoy the performance in its entirety. So do yourself a favor - put down the liner notes, put down the track listing. Turn up the volume, relax, and enjoy.
