Song Of The Marching Children / Atlantis = 2 CD Digipack = (CD)
Earth & Fire was one of the leading Dutch prog rock bands who also had their share of pop hits. While their hits also saw single releases, their full LPs (at least as long as they were on Polydor) often included a hit or two, but mainly they concentrated on more progressive material, that tended heavy on the Mellotron, Hammond organ, and synthesizers, with the female vocals of Jerney Kaagman. Song of the Marching Children, from 1971, and Atlantis, from '73, represent Earth & Fire at the top of their game. Song of the Marching Children starts off with four, relatively short pieces, that is "Carnival of the Animals", "Ebbtide", "Storm and Thunder" and "In the Mountains". "Storm and Thunder" was the hit, but here you get the full version that included the organ intro and the Mellotron outro. "In the Mountains" bears more than a striking resemblance to Focus, so much as Chris Koerts playing guitar just like Jan Akkerman. Then the album ends with the title track. This is basically an extended version of the single the band released earlier in 1971, with all the epic passages you come to expect in prog, alternating between vocal passages, and instrumental Mellotron passages. The song appropriately ends with the sound of marching drums. Atlantis continues in the same vein as Song of the Marching Children. The album starts with the side-length title cut. This cut is about the rise and destruction of Atlantis (a subject touched by other prog bands of the time, such as Eloy with their 1977 album Ocean). Unlike the title track to "Song of the Marching Children", "Atlantis" sounds more like a collection of separate songs. Rather than several movements segued in to each other, it's several movements with silent gaps between them. Regardless, this piece is effective. Then the second half of the album feature shorter pieces, with the hit "Maybe Tomorrow, Maybe Tonight" that bear an uncanny resemblance Spanky & Our Gang (it occured to me a few years ago how much this song resembles "Sunday Will Never Be the Same"). Then you have "Fanfare", a more epic prog composition with the Mellotron taking center stage (lots of tron brass here, I guess that's no surprise when the lyrics dea
