Carl And The Passions - "So Tough" = Japanese, Papersleeve = (CD)
Another change in the line-up and a dozen more changes in style. Bruce Johnston's gone and taking his place are two South African musicians, drummer Ricky Fataar and guitarist Blondie Chaplin, both from The Flame. In addition to the two new members, everyone else is starting to 'partner up' with songwriting duties, so this album is basically the result of four different writing teams: Blondie/Ricky, Al/Mike, Brian/Jack Rieley, and Dennis Wilson/Daryl Dragon (the male half of Captain & Tennille). And of course, since everyone has totally different directions for the band, this makes for a very confusing listen. It's definitely the least Beach Boys-sounding album they've done yet, in that you won't see genre tags for 'baroque pop', 'sunshine pop' or 'psychedelic pop' anywhere.
