Tropical Heat (CD)
Tropical Heat shows Ashra as fresh and exciting in the '90s as their mid-period Virgin albums were in the '70s with the same original lineup, including Manuel Goettsching leading the band on synths and guitar, Lutz Ulbrich on synths, as well as guitar, and Harald Grosskopf on electronic percussion. Together they produce a set of catchy melodies and lively, almost playful rhythms, to imbue the pieces with just the right amount of spice and balance. In them, you'll hear the things that made "Correlations" and "Belle Alliance" so popular. The titles of the pieces, "Mosquito Dance", "Tropical Heat", "Pretty Papaya", "Nights in Sweat", "Don't Stop the Fan", and "Monsoon", all reflect the humid, equatorial climate of the tropics, and admirably complement the music. However, because of this theme, you may encounter a slight deviation from what you have come to expect from Ashra. This is due to the various island and reggae rhythms that are used in "Tropical Heat". Goettsching's cyclic, almost sequential guitar phrases, coupled with Grosskopf's electronic drums and Ulbrich's keys and sequencers, all combine to make for some very exceptional and irresistible musical dances. In other words, you won't be able to sit still for too long while this music is playing.
