Multiplication (CD)
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Gale began playing guitar at the age of 12. He became known first as a session musician in the 1960s, eventually appearing on an estimated 500 albums. Among the many artists he recorded with were Aretha Franklin, Bob James, Paul Simon, Lena Horne, Quincy Jones, Bob Marley, Nina Simone, Peter Tosh, Grover Washington, Jr., Herbie Mann, Esther Phillips, Joe Cocker, Carly Simon, Van Morrison, Al Jarreau, Dave Grusin, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Paul Douglas and Billy Joel. Eric Gale's second album "Multiplication" was produced by Bob James, who brings a synth-savvy snap to these '70s fusion platters, sessions that were designed in the wake of Donald Byrd's vocal-heavy jazz-funk. Gale dominates on Multiplication, he starts carving out space for some seriously satisfying single-line runs and those grooves are enjoyable too. This record is a R&B-heavy fusion workout, not jazz sessions, they're fun pieces of fleeting mood music.
