Just Family = Japanese = (CD)
Good vibes went with 'Just Family' from day one - Dee Dee Bridgewater's pregnancy inspiring its era defining artwork, themes of birth and relationships dominate selections. Not contributing as a writer in any context, Bridgewater's classic soul groove only falters on brief occasions - 'Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word' takes time to make its point, final statement 'Melody Maker' meant to bookend these homely philosophies although a little short to make it feel more of a rushed afterthought, a shame as it's a charming piece when played on its own. Jazz/Soul as it can be expected for 1977, light on brass and orchestra endeavors, high on the Bobbi Humphreys, Gene Harris, and Dianne Reeves touches, 'Just Family' has a sly ability to sensually grab attention, Bridgewater's vocal not worlds' apart from a pleasing Minnie Ripperton sweetness.
