This band is a side project formed by members and former members of Dark Funeral (Emperor Magus Caligula, Dominion, and Gaahnfaust) and a few other bands. The material presented to us is some powerful, melodic, mid-paced death/doom metal, a huge departure from the normal Dark Funeral sound. There are some keyboards and female vocals sprinkled in various places to give it a sense of variety. They work very well IMO. This album is based on the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, with some decadence of the said empire thrown in too. The lyrics are diverse enough to make them interesting. There is no Satan worshiping here, just Roman based lyrics. This is a very refreshening listen after you hear Dark Funeral, who are basically all speed and hate, although a good band nonetheless. The production is top notch also, courtesy of Peter Tagtgren of Hypocrisy. A little strange seeing as how he sacked Caligula out of Hypocrisy years ago. This is a very diverse listen, and I recommend this to fans of Black/Death/Doom Metal, especially Dark Funeral fans, although they may not like it, since it is not hyperspeed. Highly enjoyable.
