Faulty (Broken Orbit) (CD)
You're not going to step out into the street whistling this music by New York experimentalist Andrea Parkins, whom one writer described as a sound-ist rather than a musician. That said, what she does is unusual. Faulty (Broken Orbit), a composition in six parts, was derived from an on-site performance at New York's Diapason gallery in which Parkins used surfaces at the site to create a variety of sounds. A few photos might have helped the listener imagine this theatrical dimension of the work. Parkins uses various forms of electronic sound processing, as well as limited sampling, and the sound world is an unfamiliar one. Yet at the root level it's produced by low-tech devices; the surfaces and objects involved in the original installation, and, most importantly, Parkins' own electric accordion, which produces a range of synthesized and processed sounds. This, too, would have had a different dimension in live performance, for it is only intermittently that you realize what instrument it is you're hearing; with the accordion in front of you, the transformations would have been more immediately perceptible, but CD listeners can also attune themselves to what's happening. The range of sonic events is startling, with drones of various kinds connecting sharply contrasting segments. Of most interest for those occupied with experimental sound synthesis, this performance also provides anchor points for those new to the genre. ~ James Manheim, Rovi
