While Monk's Dream was not a turning point in the artistic career of Thelonious Monk, it was certainly a turning point in the publics acceptance of the man and his work. Having just signed with Columbia, Monk's fame was catching up with his abilities. Though the album was a commercial breakthrough, which can often be a double edged sword, with Monk releasing, or perhaps allowing to have released [which is my hope] a batch of older compositions, three standards, [with "Just A Gigolo," and "Body And Soul" being beautifully done], along with only one single new venture, "Bright Mississippi," a song which has many meanings and implications when one considers the year 1963.
