Vigilante (CD)
Capitalising on the success of On a Storyteller's Night, Magnum change to a more commercial direction with their 1986 album Vigilante. Produced by Roger Taylor and David Richards, the band's sound stepped towards a sound with keyboards much higher in the mix than Tonys guitars. The album was recorded at Queen's famous Mountain Studios in Montreux. Three singles were released to promote the album, "Lonely Night", "Midnight (You Won't Be Sleeping)" and "When the World Comes Down".
Vigilante entered the UK National charts at #24, and the album was well received in Europe, charting at #18 in here in Sweden and #57 in Germany, along with a worldwide release in Japan, USA and Canada.
I remember the day this album was released, me and my pal Stefan took the bikes and went to the recordstore the same day that the album was released and put it on at the vinylplayer... And we were stunned once again. Even if the pomp-sound was gone the songs were really strong. There are nine songs on the originalalbum where six of them are fantastic. There are two songs that I don't give me much at all on the album - the rockier "Red On The Highway" and "Holy Rider", and "Back Street Kid" isn't a real favorite either but otherwise - the album is once again a proof of what an outstanding songwriter Tony Clarkin is and the album contain some of the best moments in Magnums career - the titletrack and "Midnight "(You Won't Be Sleeping"). Four really strong stars and if it wasn't for three tracks this album would have got a fifth star. But three songs out of nine are actually three too many. And when it comes to Magnum I compare the band with their other stuff.
