John Coltrane comes over all Sound of Music on this post-bop classic, where standards like the title track or Summertime disintegrate into extended soprano saxophone workouts. Don't let the showtunes focus of the album put you off, because Coltrane is simply using them as a jumping-off point for his explorations of post-bop modal soundscapes before returning to the safe harbour fo the chorus. Coltrane divides his attention between the soprano saxophone for the more playful first half of the album and the tenor saxophone for the mildly more downbeat second half, perfectly matching the instrument to the mood of the piece and proving himself a master of both.
