Pieces Of Me (CD)
In my endless trawls through the forgotten song music albums of the 60s and 70s, this is one of the best singers I've come across. She's actually flat-out amazing and this album is definitely a candidate for a higher rating, but the music is kind of mediocre outside of the singing, generally tending towards tepid soft pop and blues rock styles in the vein of Laura Nyro. There's one major anomaly to be found, the lumbering heavy acid rock of the title track, not a great piece, but still a very good listen with her wailing pipes. It's not so surprising when one considers she'd been a member of the acclaimed rock group Affinity before this album, and the somewhat jazz-rock-flavored "Black Crow" reflects this background and the fact she prepared a lot of this material in collaboration with Karl Jenkins of later Soft Machine fame. "Morning for One" is the standout track for me, a gorgeous piano ballad with singing that evokes Dusty Springfield. Anyone with a taste for the mainstream song music of this era who wants to hear a fairly stunning singer isn't going to be disappointed with this album, which was fairly well-known at the time from what I can gather.
