The 1990 masterpiece "On the seventh Day, God Created... Master" by death metal pioneers Master is a fascinating (re)discovery of both the roots of a genre and the territories it already occupied, which later developed in different directions. There are a number of things here that immediately stand out, even for the casual listener: First, the apparent primitiveness of the music, with bludgeoning songs carried along by never-ending rhythms, repetitive riffs and simple melodic hooks. Secondly, the perception that someone is playing some seriously sick, brilliantly constructed lead guitars, in this particular case that someone is Paul Masvidal, going far beyond what he ever achieved with his band Cynic.
