1977 was a time when jazz fusion musicians were looking for new influences from a new direction. The scene, half excluding Weather Report, had fallen into an 'electric trap' in the early 1970s. After The Mahavishnu Orchestra had become as big as they were, Return to Forever neatly followed them into the magical land of electric guitar. This actually brought some fine results, as the post-Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy (that one sounded a bit too neurotic for my taste) material is mostly quite good. Perhaps the process culminated on Romantic Warrior (1976), which was hard to define whether it was a jazz fusion or instrumental prog rock album. I don't mean that musicians should stick to their genres, vice versa; however this means that it is intelligible why Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke were looking into a different direction. As Al Di Meola preferred solo career and Stomu Yamashta's Go at the time, it was time to say goodbye to the guitar and bring the horns back in once again. Plus, the vocals.
