Lana Lane's superb symphonic hardrock records leave no doubt of her diverse vocal strengths, but this set may be an even more convincing demonstration. Her 1998 "Ballad Collection" provided a daringly delicate context for her remarkable voice, with highlights like the melodic gem "Avalon" (originally by Rocket Scientists) and rich takes of "When Time Stood Still" (ELO) and "Across The Universe" (Beatles). This crisp sounding new "Special Edition" extends that original album, adding, among other treats, a new disc recorded in 2000. While the new sessions are not quite as uniformly successful as the old (for instance, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" loses some of the loose warmth of Elton John's original version) there are many wonderful moments, like the moody pop of "Hands To Heal," the spectacularly lush harmonies on "Critical Mass," and the somber, reflective classic "Autumn Leaves."
