Long considered to be a Krautrock band, as is usual for a German rock band in the early 1970s, the four musicians from Cologne developed a very independent and unmistakable sound with a high recognition value on their debut album "Desert Places" (released in 1974 on the Brain label, the trademark for rock music from Germany). The reward for their efforts - the debut album was enough for the listeners of the Südwestfunk radio station to vote Satin Whale Germany's most popular band in the "Rocksound 74" competition that same year.
