The "New Riders Of The Purple Sage" were a side project of the Grateful Dead, but quickly became a hit with the radio hit 'Panama Red' due to the hippie country rock they played. In 1971 the debut album 'The New Riders of the Purple Sage' was released, which featured a mixture of West Coast and Country. This was followed by the albums 'Powerglide' (1972), 'Gypsy Cowboy' (1973), 'The Adventures of Panama Red' (with Buffy Sainte-Marie and the Memphis Horns) and the live album 'Home, Home on the Road' (1974).
