Two doom bands who belong to the I Hate -roster have decided to join their forces on this split, I mean the epic doom ambassadors of Malta known as Forsaken, and our homely Lappish doom wonder Fall of the Idols. This split has in that way pretty great name as well, that where as Forsaken represents more traditional doom, there Fall of the Idols is known for that, that it can create extremely mournful, but at the same time melancholical soundscapes. The side of Forsaken consists of a reworked version of previously unreleased song, and a Candlemass -cover Solitude, which in itself might not be the most original choice of song for a doom band to cover. The reworked version of the song Visions In Thy Shadow is in all possible ways quite traditional Forsaken, with its epic melodies and dramatic vocals. Good song, in any case. Solitude on the other hand has been played quite faithfully according to the original version, and the band has not made many changes to it. The only thing bigger difference must be the way it is sung, since the vocals are if possible even more mournful and dramatic than in the original version. I will raise this version at least in the same level with Swallow The Sun's rendition of the same song, where one certain Hynninen was singing. One of the most listenable versions of a doom-song covered by a doom-band, thus. Fall of the Idols then again offers us two previously unreleased songs: Black Magic Mushrooms and Omen From the Sea. I guess you can already guess quite well from those song titles, that what kind of atmosphere they have. Where as in the first one mentioned there is indeed quite acidic atmosphere, in the second one there is in even this kind of sense of lovecraftian darkness. Typically to Fall of the Idols, both songs have quite crushing guitar walls, and strong yet mournful vocals. Quite a routine performance from Fall of the Idols again, yet I think both songs are worth of hearing to their fans. Black vinyl, limited to 350 copies.
