Turn To Flame = Papersleeve = (CD)
Kalaban's first phase eventually stopped sometime in the 90's.Years later the Stout's and Graves reconnected to the Prog world via the 2-track EP ''Turn to flame'', which contains compositions recorded by the band in late-90's.Here we see a band in the downfall. Both tracks clock at over 10 minutes, but there is a certain inconsisteny throughout: Raw solos, symphonic passages, Fusion experiments, acoustic explorations and ambiental moods, which do not sit well next to eah other. The basis of music is a Symphonic-Fusion amalagma with shiny guitar plays and some beautiful keyboard arrangements, but the darker moves combined with ethereal themes are not a proper mix to my ears.Sometimes heavy, sometimes very mellow and the vocals of David Wilbur are not in a great level. At least they kept the progressive values high to appreciate this mini-CD.
