Steam Radio Tapes (CD)
A highly original musician with an instantly recognizable style, Gary Windo was marginally involved with the Canterbury scene in the Seventies. Most notable was his work with Robert Wyatt on the albums Rock Bottom (1974) and Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard (1975), and Hugh Hopper on 1984 (1973) and Hoppertunity Box (1976). He was also a member of the Carla Bley band for three years. Despite the fact that he performed and recorded with a profoundly wide variety of jazz and rock musicians from the 60s to his untimely death in 1992, he was and is relatively unknown. He took up the saxophone at the age of 17 while in the Merchant Navy, and by 1960 he had emigrated from his native England to the U.S. and was playing across the country in various R&B combos.
Past bands: Brotherhood of Breath (1970-73), Centipede (1970-75), Symbiosis (1970-?), The Running Man (1972), Wyatt-MacRae-Windo- Matthewson (1973), Matching Mole (1973), I Dogou (1974), Carla Bley Band (1977-80), NRBQ (1981-92), Psychedelic Furs (1982), various Gary Windo Bands
Gary Windo's Steam Radio Tapes project, featuring Nick Mason on drums and as producer, as well as other notables like Robert Wyatt and Hugh Hopper are the first actual recordings done at Britannia Row. Though never released as an album, some of these songs have been released piecemeal over the years.
