Spiral Of Fear (CD)
TARANTULA is not something new in the Heavy/Power Metal circuit. The band from Portugal was formed in the early 80s and released the first LP in 1987, while maintaining a non-split up career ever since, only to show some sporadically active discography with a 3-4 years gap between each release. This is the quartet's eighth album and if you wonder why you have possibly not ever come across their name I'd dare say the promotional efforts were quite pale all these years even if the band was e.g. signed to AFM Records in the late 90s.
Anyway, with a band in such experience and maturity you would not expect something poorly worked, would you? The album is solid and the musicianship is in high levels. The rhythm section is staccato with enough double bass pedaling but no exaggerations while the rhythm guitars are sharp in a groovy way bout not vicious or edgy at all. The solos are well-structured but lack the feeling of some traditional Heavy Metal - the style TARANTULA flirted with in the vast majority of their career. I'd categorize this band into being keen on some more modern Heavy/Power Metal style all these years; mature and well-recorded but not that striking in terms of songwriting.
