Who Do They Think That They Are (CD)
This is a Cd of an interview with Ian Gillan, conducted in 1984 during the rehearsals which led up to the Perfect Strangers tour. The Mk. 2 lineup had just gotten back together, and the acrimony between Gillan and Blackmore had not quite sunk in yet. The band was excited about their new release (decent but not the best album ever), and they were raring to go. Gillan offers his candid insights on the music business, about the press' perception of Deep Purple, plus his approach to songwriting (the music comes first, then the words; he uses "Rat Bat Blue" as an example and then discusses his own band's "Lusitania Express"). He also admits he's never listened to Burn and Stormbringer and claims that he's never going back to his solo stuff (which proved to be untrue, as the 89-92 period found us with a deluge of solo stuff). Gillan's personality comes through, very friendly and unassuming.
