The Sutherland brothers began their career in 1968 as A New Generation and had a small success with the single "Smokie Blues Away", which used a melody based on the main theme of Dvorák's New World Symphony
With The Sutherland Brothers Band they won a record deal with Island Records and released their first album in 1972. The first single "The Pie" by The Sutherland Brothers Band became a huge hit in January 1972. The Sutherland Brothers originally performed as a folk rock duo in the early 70s, but from 1973 to 1978 they joined the rock band Quiver to record and tour as Sutherland Brothers & Quiver. Here they had their biggest hit with "Arms of Mary"
The band split up in 1979 after the release of their last album When The Night Comes Down, the last single was "First Love"/"Crazy Town".
