If you are not familiar with James Blood Ulmer, you are certainly missing an important artist in In your collection. This particular album is probably his best work. Calvin Weston as one of the two drummers drives the music forward at a frenetic pace, while Ulmer dives in with short riffs in and out. Irene Datcher, who sings with Ulmer on several tracks, has the vocal power to rise above the frantic music
The most impressive is the flying Bass of Amin Ali! This album is not for the faint hearted. Ulmer's fusion of harmonic-melodic jazz (a la Coleman) rocks and requires some attention. The Listener should relax and focus on James' guitar, while the rest of the band comes at you like a like a steamroller.
