Hot off the success of 2010's critically acclaimed Moving On, Erica Dunham, better known as Unter Null, has released a startling deviation from the Unter Null sound to display a softer, more somber aspect of her creativity: Letting Go, under the project name Stray. Creating a follow-up to two popular albums in the aggrotech scene is no easy feat. The pressure of creating an album that satisfies fans without treading the same ground is high. Fans and critics have placed her under the microscope. Fortunately, Letting Go goes the full nine yards of satisfaction and then some. Dunham's classically trained fingers have a knack for electronic music, and while that was always noticeable under the sheets of menacing, dissonant electronic assaults in Unter Null, it is more prominent on this release. The electronic layering takes the backset to swelling synthesizers that moan, sigh, and groan. The faint hum of string arrangements is noticeable on several tracks. Gone are the vicious barks of Unter Null, and in place are Dunham's raw, stripped-down, melodic vocals that add newfound dimensions to her talent. The EBM stylings of past works are still here in fragments, but as a whole, this is a complete reinvention for Dunham.
