Peter Gabriel would eventually break away in an even more radical fashion (with his spiky third solo album in 1980, also called Peter Gabriel), but in 1977 he was still audibly feeling his way out. If the bombastic album opener Moribund The Burgermeister sounded like an open challenge to his ex-Genesis bandmates (top THIS, Tony Banks!), the rest of the album was more suggestive of a full-scale identity crisis: earnest singer-songwriter material, arena rock, music-hall whimsy, and even disco all make their way in here.
