Strawberry Cream and Gunpowder is a dance piece by Yasmeen Goder, with guitarist Belleli providing a live soundtrack to the dancers' performance -- this album of the same title is producer extraodinaire Udi Koomran's recording of one such performance. As implied by its title, the piece, and its accompanying soundtrack, is a meditation on the effects of modern-day terror, fear and war and its integration into everyday life. I can only imagine how powerful the performance must be, as this audio recording is rather unsettling on its own. While Belleli is ostensibly a guitarist, much of Strawberry Cream and Gunpowder consists of abstract soundscaping, occupying a territory well-described by Piero Scaruffi as "halfway between ambient music and musique concrete." Quiet electronics give way to lonely screams, distant sobbing (or is it laughing?), and other disembodied sounds that communicate a stark and frankly depressing mood. "S.C.G.P. A and G" is the one of most straightforward (and memorable) pieces of the bunch, featuring a repetitive guitar line, wordless vocals singing a forlorn melody, and abrasive blasts of distortion well-placed for maximum effect as the piece nears its end. At the opposite end of the spectrum are "S.C.G.P. shmama" and "S.C.G.P. shahid," which see Belleli insert small melodies into a landscape of quiet electronics, punctuated in the latter by the occasional surprising -- and invariably disturbing -- wordless vocalizations from the dancers. Most of Strawberry Cream and Gunpowder is stark, minimalistic and vaguely unsettling, but it's the humanizing voices and sounds, which often enter just as the listener begins to be lulled into a trance by the quiet electronics, that give it its full power. This is by no means a fun recording to listen to (or even an "enjoyable" one in any conventional sense of the word), but it is one that will take the open-minded listener on quite the emotional trip.
