The Candles, which is the first solo project of Josh Lattanzi encompasses the varied styles and influences he's picked up while recording and touring with the likes of Ben Kweller, Albert Hammond, Jr. (The Strokes) and the Lemonheads, to mention just a few. "Making music with such talented people for so long has been incredibly inspiring. I could keep making albums and touring with these artists who are so damned good at what they do, and I probably will, but it feels like the right time to do something that truly belongs to me," the multi-instrumentalist says of the inspiration for The Candles' debut, "Between The Sounds." With the first significant free time he had in years, Lattanzi began the process of crafting his debut. From June to October of 2008 he wrote and recorded demos in his New York City apartment. "John Kent (who had played with Lattanzi in Kweller's band) expressed a serious interest in being a part of it and he has a studio in Celeste, Texas," Lattanzi explains before describing the ideal locale for some serious studio isolation. "There's really nothing there other than some boarded up old shops, one convenience store and a great recording studio," he recalls of the Spartan conditions he endured during November of last year. "We lived off frozen pizza and P.B.R. and for ten days recorded non-stop, from ten in the morning until two at night." Finishing the album in NYC this past spring, Lattanzi returned to the road with Tinted Windows (Taylor Hanson, James Iha, Bun E. Carlos and Adam Schlesinger), eventually enlisting his new bandmate, Iha, to contribute to the track, "Anywhere Tonight." The west coast sounds of the seventies that snaked like a vine from Gram Parsons through Evan Dando and Ryan Adams nestle up nicely to Lattanzi on such tunes as "Let Me Down Easy" and "Between The Sounds" while "Here Or Gone" finds the singer delivering a big "roll down the car windows" chorus that would make Tom Petty smile.
