Lindsay Cooper was a rare and extraordinary woman; at home in rock bands (Henry Cow, National Health), Jazz ensembles (Mike Westbrook Orchestra, Maarten Altena Octet) Concert Halls (Concerto for Sopranino Saxophone and Orchestra, Songs for bassoon and Orchestra); she also founded the Feminist Improvising Group, scored feature films and wrote for television, dance, radio, theatre, contemporary ensembles and orchestras - as well as being highly respected as a virtuoso performer on several instruments. A number of recordings are still available, but much is undocumented. The rarities series hopes to redress this lack. Our first collection brings together materials that originally appeared in tiny private editions or as single tracks on compilations. Outakes for Other Occasions was released in 1986 as a subscription item with Music for Other Occasions, and is mainly music for theatre and film; The Small Screen, Music for Television was released as a limited edition cassette in 1984, on Lindsay's own Sync Pulse label. The extract from the Concerto for Sopranino Saxophone and Orchestra comes from an Angelica festival compilation in 1992, and there are four pieces taken from the long lost Beginners Guide to No Man's Land, from 1988. On CD 2, In the Dark Year was made to raise money for the Miner's Strike in 1984, and Education originally appeared on the Re Records Quarterly Volume 1 Number 1. Pictures from the Great Exhibition was a limited edition subscription item released with the LP Rags and Petrified is taken from the long lost (David Thomas says it never existed) Winter Comes Home LP from 1983. Two pellucid gems complete the programme: 33 minutes and 33 seconds of a beautiful recording of the Trio Trabant (Lindsay Cooper, Alfred Harth and Phil Minton) made in 1991 and heard here for the first time, and the luminous Rosetta Stone that is Piano Roulette - a newly discovered piano solo performed at a concert in New York in 1985.
