This album is an unfortunately overlooked and underrated piece of John Coltrane's dauntingly vast discography. That said, I'm not surprised. It's relaxed and it's not particularly forward thinking. For people investigating Coltrane's discography Milt Jackson/vibes might not be a favorite and, by and large, it's Milt bringin' the cool on this one. Coltrane on the other hand is in full command of his sheets of sound at this point, near the peak of his pre-modal sound. It is worth noting that three out of five pieces included in the original release of this album (the bonus tracks versionis better, and you should get that one!) are standards, and the other two are Milt Jackson composed; no Coltrane originals here! And there lies the issue for a lot of people here, methinks.
