Salomao (CD)
One of the most unusual records ever made by vibist Dave Pike - a unique hybrid of Brazilian rhythms and jazz fusion - all carried off with sounds that are incredibly earthy overall! The record's quite different than any of Pike's previous projects for the MPS label - still done with a version of the Dave Pike Set that includes Volker Kriegel on guitar and Eberhard Weber on bass - but recorded in Bahia with help from Grupo Baiafro - a percussion heavy combo led by the great Djalma Correa! Tunes are long and laidback - building up with an energy level that's very organic, and almost improvisational. Pike's vibes still sparkle brightly, but with a nice change in tone.
