The Welsh band ANCIENT GREASE was formed in spring 1970 from the remnants of the two bands Eyes of Blue and Strawberry Dust. Main motivator of this new band was later MAN-member John Weathers, who also wrote most of the songs for ANCIENT GREASE, but not even been a band member. ANCIENT GREASE were led by Graham "MORTY" MORTIMER at the microphone and guitarist GRAHAM WILLIAMS. Both later acquired an even greater level of awareness through their involvement in the Welsh band RACING CARS.
ANCIENT GREASE played a for that time very trendy heavy blues-rock with a shot of prog. So the band earned a growing audience. "Women and Children First" was supposed to appear on the legendary Vertigo Swirl label, there was already an even number label. But at the last moment, the record company decided otherwise, and so the album was released in summer 1970 on Mercury Records. Unfortunately Mercury gave album and band were little support and focused instead on the album released by Rod Stewart, "An Old Raincoat Will Never Let You Down". That also meant the end of ANCIENT GREASE's record career. But over the years "Women & Children First" became one of the rarest albums, for the british magazine Record Collector one of the rarest rock albums ever. Now here's this cult album back on vinyl for the first time for over 40 years, on 180 gram vinyl. For the first time in gatefold cover. A real gem!
