Now and then (CD)
This album is a strange hybrid of full on Van Der Graaf Generator tracks and some curious instrumental tracks by Jackson: Banton & Evans. The Peter Hammill track 'Liquidator' retains the trademark brooding intelligence of VDGG at their finest. The instrumentals are experiments exploring different moods and sounds, even venturing into the world of reggae. It is a glimpse into the musical world of these highly inventive and talented musicians and shows us their work in progress. As with all VDGG music it remains challenging and thought provoking. It is a must for any fan of this incredible group of musicians. These are archive recordings from the halcyon lost period of VDGG recorded between 1972 and 1975. Post "Pawn Hearts and pre "Godbluff", Now & Then is a curious release that all fans should hear at least once. Much of it is compiled from the group's personal tapes recorded between their two classic periods. If you ever wondered what VDGG would have sounded like without Peter Hammill's voice and songwriting you have two choices: either you find the first album of The Long Hello, or you get into this sometimes crudely recorded release. Actually having listened to both albums, neither of them sounds the same and neither do they sound much like VDGG. Having said that, this isn't really an instrumental album as Peter Hammill added vocals for "Liquidator" at a later stage. All of the tracks have been lovingly re-mastered using modern technology. As far as possible the tracks have been cleaned and remixed. They are presented with as much clarity as modern electronics will allow.
