Norweigan rockers Turbonegro reached a turning point with their fourth album, 1996's ASS COBRA. Though their brand of "deathpunk" found its way to the masses several years later when the band was featured on MTV's VIVA LA BAM show, this was the first flowering of their fully realized style. De-emphasizing the metal aspects of their sound, Turbonegro incorporated a classic punk sensibility. The majority of the tracks here mix a metal sensibility with the influence of early hardcore; the mostly midtempo tracks boast chugging guitars that could have come straight off a Stooges album, and the primal guitar hooks and vocals bear echoes of Black Flag, Circle Jerks, et al. While this approach may have lost Turbonegro a portion of their early, more metal-inclined following, it set the stage for them to realize their international deathrock destiny.
