OK, the absolute pinnacle of Japanese psych. A masterpiece from start to end (although the last 2 tracks on side 2 don't do it for me - but considering what there is to be heard before these 2 tracks, you can easily forget about them..). The sidelong track ("The question mark") that fills side one of this album is one of the most intense pieces of music I've ever heard. It starts with the vocalist whispering some words about being a human being, and what is being, with a muted organ drone in the background. Then the guys kind of tune in, every guy seems to wake up from a deep long sleep and stretch their limbs for a few minutes, and slowly it grows. From sleepy noodling to utter intensity. Then, my favorite bit is when the singer gets to the line "Gives life and takes it, gives life and takes it.. it takes it now", howling and tearing his vocal chords into shreds. Fantastic bass sound, SHARP AS A BLADE killer fuzz guitars, great flute and sax.. This is underground music at its best (it is definitely rock music, although it borrows a lot from free jazz and the most intense/urgent side of prog..).
