Book of dreams = Digipack = (CD)
This album was recorded during the same sessions as the 'Fly Like An Eagle' album, and bears many similarities to that work. If you like that one, you'll love 'Book Of Dreams' - if anything it's better. From the atmospheric introduction of 'Threshold', and the sombre and beautiful 'Wintertime', to the irresistably cheerful 'Swingtown' and the thoughtful and understated 'Sacrifice' (possibly the stand-out track), this album has no discernible weak points. Displaying admirable diversity - for example the pensive 'My Own Space' and 'Wish Upon A Star' sit comfortably with the tongue-in-cheek 'True Fine Love' - Steve Miller takes you on a journey through his broad range of musical moods. Miller's guitar virtuosity is much in evidence, particularly his soloing on 'The Stake', but he always knew how to exercise restraint, and there is plenty of room for swirling keyboards and indeed much scope for the talents of his band. As usual, Miller often calls upon the songwriting skills of his colleagues, and this contributes strongly to the musical blend. When I first bought this album, I couldn't put it down for weeks, a very rare ocurrence for me. Always radio friendly in a 1970s way, but never over-commercial or tiresomely sentimental, 'Book of Dreams' is exactly the kind of album that made Miller his millions, and with good reason.
