"Freak show" offers six portraits of side show freaks. There are several other cuts that function as an introductory overture, a summation--and one that looks at the peculiarities of the audience who come to gawk. The album is ripe with the feelings of dislocation experienced when stepping into the sideshow world, both for the audience as well as for those on display. FREAK SHOW was subsequently expanded visually into an interactive CD-ROM, where viewers could enter the various tents, exploring at their own pace whatever "freaks" captured their fancy. The vocals for this project feature an assortment of guests. Dispensing with the extreme processing that is normally associated with The Residents' singing, these vocalists are broadly theatrical, an approach completely in keeping with the subject at hand.
