Carrig River (CD)
Hailing from Ferns in Co. Wexford Shades of MacMurrough formed in 1971. They made several appearances on RTE television and released their debut single Julia on Dolphin Records in 1971. Comprised of Mary and Josephine ONeill and Paul Kavanagh they sepcialised in close harmonies and accompanied themselves on 6&12 string guitars,spinet, autoharp, tin whistle and bodhran. Signing to Polydor Ireland in 1972 they recorded their first album Carrig River. Released in 1973 Carrig River features some of the finest poems and ballads from the Irish folk tradition spanning four centuries including Follow Me Up to Carlow, She Moved through the Fair while the title track Carrig River and Courtown Fishermen echo the rich folk traditions of their native Wexford. Shades of Mac Murroughs Carrick River has been long held as an acid folk holy grail and is a mellifluous blend of sublime vocal harmonies and subtle instrumentation.
